Seven alleged members of German far-left group stand trial over series of violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the nickname “the hammer group”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the network was behind targeting locations in Germany and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E., became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
